Steven Smith – Welder / Fabricator Senior

Steven’s SaltSep Journey

Steven joined SaltSep straight from school in 2001, beginning his career with us as an apprentice. From a young age, he always knew he wanted to pursue a career in engineering and during his apprenticeship, he had the chance to explore different areas of the business. It was just six months in when he found his passion for welding – and he’s never looked back.

He credits much of his development to the people who trained him early on and remains grateful for the support and guidance that have helped shape his career. Today, Steven works as a Welder/Fabricator Senior playing an important role in the production of our bespoke water treatment systems.

Steven has continued to build on his technical knowledge while at SaltSep, completing a City & Guilds qualification in Mechanical Engineering and an NVQ Level 3 in Fabrication and Welding. As well as this, he is also a certified first aider.

What Steven Enjoys About Working at SaltSep

For Steven, one of the most rewarding parts of the job is seeing a project come to life. Whether it’s watching a completed plant running in the workshop or seeing a satisfied customer, he enjoys knowing his work has made a real impact.

He also enjoys the variety of tasks he handles each day and values the strong working relationships within the workshop team. Over the years, his role has taken him to dockyards across the UK and even to locations overseas, including Estonia and Italy, most often working on plant upgrades.

What a Typical Day Looks Like for Steven

Steven starts each day by checking in with his manager to finalise the tasks ahead. His responsibilities are varied and might include pipe welding, welding framework or working in the fitting shop to assemble the components he’s previously fabricated. He works closely with the design team, project engineers and fitters to ensure everything runs smoothly.

Having worked in the industry for over two decades, Steven has developed a wide range of technical and practical skills. While at SaltSep, he’s been trained to weld various materials used in pressure vessels and pipework. He’s also become highly skilled at thinking on his feet – often resolving issues quickly and effectively as they arise.

What Steven Does in his Free Time

Outside of work, Steven enjoys travelling around the UK – particularly the Lake District. He also enjoys videography, motorsports, cooking and spending time with family.

Steven is a valued member of our team and plays an important role in supporting our customers around the world. Want to meet more of the people behind SaltSep?  Click here to learn more about our team.
