Tom’s Salt Sep Journey
Say hello to Tom, one of our talented Service Engineers! Tom joined the Salt Sep family way back in October 2013 as an apprentice fabricator/welder. Over four years in our mild steel fabrication shop, he gained experience manufacturing skids, frameworks, pipework and pressure vessels, all while completing an NVQ Level 3 qualification through day release at a local college. After developing his skills with mild steel, Tom stepped into the stainless-steel fabrication shop, spending the next five years working on pressure vessels and high-pressure pipework. He even acquired weld codings for offshore-spec work. But Tom didn’t stop there! In 2023, he headed back to college to complete a HNC qualification, which helped him transition into his current role as a Service Engineer.
Before joining Salt Sep, Tom explored a few different career paths. He first earned a PGA (Professional Golf Association) qualification and spent a couple of years teaching golf. After that, he tried his hand at hospitality and construction before finding his calling here with us!
What Tom Likes About Working at Salt Sep
For Tom, the constant change and challenge of his role keep things exciting! Whether it’s tackling electrical and mechanical tasks to fault-finding, each day brings something new to tackle.
“I find real job satisfaction in servicing and repairing equipment, knowing that I’m making a tangible impact.”
Some of his proudest moments include leading the installation of a six-module cruise ship system in Cadiz, Spain, working on complex defence projects and contributing to high-spec manufacturing for the offshore industry. Along the way, he’s built an impressive skill set, from welding and fabrication to fitting and assembly. More recently, he has focused on building his mechanical skills and expanding his process and technical knowledge. He is also currently improving his expertise in fault finding and electrical systems through additional courses.
What a Typical Day is Like for Tom
Tom’s day is anything but ordinary! When he’s working in-house, you’ll find him stripping, inspecting, rebuilding and testing pumps and valves, as well as pressure testing and calibrating equipment before it heads out to customers. But his role often takes him on exciting adventures offshore! Whether he’s flying by helicopter, sailing on cruise ships or visiting dockyards across the UK, Tom is busy servicing and maintaining RO plants, diagnosing equipment issues and installing repairs or new equipment.
What Tom Does in his Free Time
When Tom’s not hard at work, he’s out exploring with his fiancée, their daughter and their dog. They love hiking, camping, cycling, running and rock climbing – and their campervan means they’re always ready for a weekend road trip! And when he gets the chance, Tom still enjoys a round of golf.
